Another week, another idea of ??the computing platform from Intel, the No. 1 maker of microprocessors for PCs and laptops.
His latest idea, the Ultrabook was introduced last week in Taipei at Computex.
The idea is to marry some attributes of the Tablet PC, which are selling like crazy, but do not use Intel chips with light laptops, sales of which are a bit slow.
Think of a very thin and light laptop which can fold the screen back, turning it into something like a tablet with touch screen. Fold back again and have a laptop with a full-size keyboard, something missing in one tablet.
Ultrabooks, to make a number of manufacturers including Asus Taiwan, less than 2 cm thick, with features such as tablet style touch screen and instant-on start-ups, and the batteries that run for up to 24 hours.

But we estimate that the price has come down to be competitive with the tablets Chromebooks and sexy, very convenient.
Purchase Lenovo Medion
Lenovo, the maker of large Chinese team bought IBM’s PC business a few years ago, has made another big purchase.
Last week I bought Medion, the largest German manufacturer of personal computers and other consumer electronics gifts.
Medion equipment, including laptops occasional desktop computers, GPS navigation devices and other devices in Australia is sold across an unexpected source: Aldi supermarket at reduced prices, also controlled by the Germans.

But you can safely bet that you will not see Apple products in a Supersmart: the case of self-service is a world away from the shops of Apple’s ultra-smooth, with doormen and Genius Bars reservation only .

Did we say smartphone? Actually not quite right, because the device sports dual quad-core CPU really should not, a laptop, set top boxes, desktop computer, and … It also functions as a smart phone as well. Atrix 4G, which sports a 4-inch, 960 x 540 display HSPA + data, and a host of other juicy specs is certainly the first of its kind – a multi-purpose device to replace its netbooks (and perhaps more) through its Webtop environment. But it can be a phone powerful enough to become your laptop or the center of your home theater? Atrix 4G hands full
Hardware
4G hardware Atrix is ??noteworthy for several reasons, not least of which is design. The phone’s body is largely plastic, but do not let that bother you too – is to bring together so solidly that it feels like a more expensive material. The handset measures 2.5 inches wide by 4.63 inches long and a thickness of only 0.43 inches, which means that the Atrix is ??nearly as thin as the iPhone 4 – quite a feat considering the entire shape of horses inner strength. The phone is likely to win some of its strength through the weight, the clocks of the non-pen 135 grams (about 4.8 ounces) – and love.
Like most phones on the board, the front of the device is nearly all screen, with the exception of family Android buttons at the bottom and facing the camera and headset to the top. Along the upper back of the phone is a power button / sleep which just happens to be a fingerprint scanner as well, and the headphone jack of 3.5 mm. Along the right side of the phone is the volume control (easily accessible with the thumb during a call, if right handed). On the left, the micro USB and HDMI ports. Around back, the elegant housing pattern is broken by the 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a speaker at the bottom of the phone.
As the hardware that is truly unique, fingerprint reader seems quite novel – but in practice is a bit frustrating. It does not work as advertised, but said it was through the finger, if not take when you’re trying to get into the phone quickly can be a bit annoying. Unless you really need high security, access key standard is sufficient for most people.
subtleties of the fingerprint scanner on one side, the Atrix 4G is one of the best players Android devices that have had the opportunity to use. We would have liked to see higher quality materials in play, but despite the home, the phone comes in a sleek and rugged – a great combination of something that is likely to double (if not triple) the right in the connected world . From the point of view of industrial design, this device more than holds its own against the best of the best in the market right now.
Interior / display / battery
Of course, 4G Atrix not really look around – it’s about raw power. You know Motorola is not a joke this phone packing a dual core CPU hot 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, 16GB of onboard storage (plus a microSD slot for another 32 GB). Along with massive internal energy, the device features a 960 x 540 capacitive touch screen that Motorola is calling your QHD screen – which also happens to be covered with Corning Gorilla glass. You’ll also find radios needed here – 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2. 1 + EDR, and of course the number GSM HSPA +, which allows AT & T (somewhat loosely) to call this phone a 4G device (more on that in a moment). The phone also has a light and proximity sensor and built-in accelerometer and compass.
In short, this is one of the fastest (if not the fastest) Android phones we’ve ever used. Moving through the phone, even the most complex tasks was incredibly fast, and rarely have the hope that some of the burden. Movement between homescreens or management of applications and widgets was smooth as silk, and feels the competition with the likes of the iPhone 4G 4 or EVO. The phone as a phone call with absolute independence, and we are constantly impressed with how skillfully was able to take all that pulled him even when playing new 3D game titles as a weapon Bros, saw a slight delay.
In the screen goes, we are very happy to see the new Android phones have higher resolution screens. With real estate QHD added features, we were able to make more use of Gmail, browser, and a handful of other content-rich applications, and text and images looked very clear on the screen. There were some problems with Android applications that do not properly take advantage of higher resolution, but they were few and far between – for the vast majority of software you use, the screen worked perfectly. Touch response was also excellent, although we can not say whether this is due to display technology in the game, or super-fast CPU. One point of note – the display is hard to see the light of day, and Auto-Brightness not quite do the trick.
On the side of the battery, 4G Atrix packages within a 1930mAh battery impressive, and while Android is data intensive, they are pushing more than 24 hours to turn the device on a single charge with heavy use. You can probably have more time to turn off the device if you avoid calls when possible and keep its shine under control, but we were pleasantly surprised by the performance we saw.
Cameras
There’s nothing sleazy about Atrix 4G, and extends to the cameras too. The real attraction here is the 5 megapixel shooter in the back of the device, which cranks breathtaking shots both high and low light, and can be quickly customized for different environments. The camera also functions as a camcorder to 720p, and have been very successful in capturing high definition content on the device. Even in low light, the results looked sharp.

In the face of the still image, we were impressed by the camera’s macro capabilities, but found that some of the images had purpleish tone was a bit worrying. Not a dealbreaker, but I think that the quality of the color or saturation was exactly what could be. As the video goes, we were impressed with the lack of movement even when walking quickly, although we are disappointed that the device enters a fixed focus mode for capturing video (see action below) as making it difficult to trip a variety of items at once.
There is also a VGA camera in front of the device. As expected the results of this shooter is not no big deal, but that did the trick when used for video calls (or hair styling.)
Despite some minor complaints, the camera in the back of Atrix 4G is more than enough to replace your basic point and shoot, and we have zero reservations about leaving the house with just this phone in your pocket.
Phone / sound quality
We have come to expect a level, without doubt, the audio quality when it comes to phones from Motorola, Atrix and did not disappoint. Not only is this phone handset exceptionally strong and clear, but the speaker in the rear offers clear sound, with the body when listening to music or speakerphone. Atrix 4G offers different levels of noise reduction on the handset, but it would not have to change anything beyond “normal” for best results. Callers with whom we spoke told us that it seemed clear, it’s always nice to hear while testing a telephone.
As for dropped calls go, we can say we’ve seen a handful, although less than normally seen in our iPhone 4 in AT & T. The network is far from perfect, but we have seen an unacceptable number of so-called issues.
Software
If you are counting on the good Gingerbready here are willing to be disappointed. Also, if you crave just the population of the Android experience, this is not the phone for you. Instead, Motorola is to treat its customers as Froyo building, with no less than (2 2). – Yes – Motoblur. We believe that social Motorola focused skin following the way of the dinosaur, but it’s back in full force Atrix 4G.
Now, before you get all disappointed and mopey, would say that the software side of the Atrix is ??pretty good, and there are lots of small improvements have made the company to carry Android together in a little over a consistent. It also helps that Google has begun to independently update their basic applications (such as Gmail and Maps) outside the system updates, which means they will have the same experience as many places as you would in an application Gingerbread S Nexus pristine.
Since this is not exactly a new version of the software, just go into some aspects that we believe are important.
For starters, we’re a little disappointed that Motorola and AT & T is charging Atrix with a considerable amount of bloatware. Vlingo, a handful of applications for AT & T, Blockbuster, and a handful of other programs for all vessels in the terminal without the possibility of deleting them. Worse, some of them occasionally vomit notifications annoying for the end user to register or use the applications. Adding insult to injury, Motorola (or AT & T, which has the habit of doing this sort of thing) has locked the device in a way that not only prevents you from flashing the phone with a custom ROM, but not even allow users to install applications via mail or SD card. That means that when we gave our developers a new version of the application of Engadget to prove it was a total not to go to this phone. So much for open!
Updated: Some of the pre-installed applications can be eliminated, but not all.
On the positive side, there are plenty of good pieces to find in this operating system, such as the inclusion of Quickoffice to deal with documents and PDF files (which is handled quickly), and some of the motives from the Moto such as the ability to use the scoring key for the names or numbers (which are greatly accelerated call-making), and have the cell phone company. The latter was easy as pie to set up, but did not deliver incredibly fast download to use (more on this in the data section.)
We are not the biggest fans of Motoblur or their players, but fortunately the vast majority of the shares of Android widgets are present here, which allows customization that lets you get closer to a pure experience. Of course, the big difference with this phone is not widgets or applications included – is the device’s ability to function as a full-fledged computer when used with an improvement in the spring, and that leads us to …
Accessories / Webtop
There should be no surprise that much of the excitement of Atrix 4G really fuss about the fact that the phone becomes a computer (almost) complete with the addition of a spring that Motorola offers. Using a piece of software the company calls Webtop (actually a time when building custom Linux), Atrix can throw in a laptop or desktop base and the fire of an alien environment where he met with a representative of the window of your phone (which is, in fact, your phone in a window), along with the Webtop software, which is largely an instance of Firefox, along with some tweaks and a better integration with phone functionality. We are using Firefox a little disconcerting – is a product of Google Chrome, and also out of alignment with Android, the browser is faster, even for low-power systems, which raises the question of why Motorola chose the younger that Firefox. In addition, Chrome has begun offering web applications properly, something that seems perfectly suited to the system as Atrix 4G. Call us crazy, but why not just boot into the operating system environment Chrome?
In any case, while Motorola provides the environment, can make and receive calls and use all the software on your phone while running the web browser or standalone applications in separate windows. If you open an application on the phone, you create a tab in the window. It is difficult to fully describe how it works, but it is an unusual combination. Telephone requests can not be run in their own windows, and while that may be expanded to accommodate a larger window (or full screen) are just the zoom (not formatted). Webtop environment provides Growl notifications for things like new emails, and also provides a representation of phone notifications along the status bar that can quickly jump to the window of his service on the phone. If you are interested in knowing what is going on the side of Firefox, will be disappointed to discover that the browser is slow by most standards, not even close to the results for the latest cheap laptops netbooks or more. Instead of real applications, you can create shortcuts to web applications, but in our experience in management, even a couple of cases, separate browser may block the system to a point of frustration. You can run Flash content in the browser, although performance was stung at best – providing an experience of only lets you see something like Hulu, bit of its lowest setting. If you are hoping to use this for video or audio streaming (even over WiFi), you may be disappointed.
In total, the history of Webtop software environment is not entirely pleasant. It’s a slow experience, a little sloppy, it is difficult to enjoy, even though the basic premise driving this technology is really exciting. We love the idea … but the execution leaves much to be desired. The software experience is hampered by some obstacles in terms of hardware, from …
Portable Dock
At first glance, the Motorola mobile base straight out of a fevered dream gadget nerd. A super thin vessel in the brain Atrix 4G with style and build quality that matches the best of Apple and Dell (which MacBook Air and Adamo). The pier is constructed of brushed metal and soft touch of sleek black plastic, is smaller and thinner than most netbook or laptop on the market, and weighs about 2.4 pounds. Metal housing also means that the device is a magnet for fingerprints, so if you get one of these puppies, hoping to keep some cleaning supplies on hand (or, maybe you do not care about those things .) Around the back is a solid foundation construction cap is installed on the phone. When you pop open your laptop, you’ll find a healthy 11. 5-inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768, a total width Chiclet keyboard is small, but not useless, and a spacious trackpad with two buttons. About two rear USB ports and power connector, and in front of the laptop is not reading the small screen battery that is activated by a small button (similar to a MacBook Pro).
The laptop does not do anything without a phone connected, but once the headquarters of 4G Atrix almost immediately begins operating system Webtop, which will be very familiar if you’ve ever used Ubuntu. Since the spring is especially the battery, which does double duty as laptop and charger – even when not connected somewhere, the phone is recharged while in use. Motorola says you can expect eight to ten hours of battery life from the dock, and the numbers seem fairly accurate during our testing. It was pretty impressive.
While the bottom of the notebook is beautifully designed and solidly constructed, in use was quite frustrating. Leaving aside our complaints about the Webtop environment, portable dock creates some major problems of its own. First is the fact that the trackpad, while large, is playing a solo, ie without moving the two fingers (or finger movement, as many PC trackpads). That means that web browsing is a huge hassle to be forced to manually scroll bar to scroll through the pages. For an environment around the “web application as a concept, it seemed very short-sighted. Also, the buttons of the trackpad rather difficult to have to click on a fairly regular basis. Strangely it’s as if Motorola built this spring for use a mouse – and in fact, company representatives were demos with the mouse settings when picked up our review unit.
We wanted to love this spring, but Motorola is asking price and the small number of useful features, it seems clear that their money would be better spent in the form of tablets or decent netbook.
HD / desktop dock
In addition to the portable dock, Motorola also provides options for desktop and home entertainment through its port high definition – a small black plastic plate is equipped with three USB ports and an HDMI connector around back. Like the laptop port, when the phone is sitting on the mode change device, and you can go to one of two environments: Webtop or entertainment center.
As you can imagine, the desktop / dock HD is not doing much better when it comes to replacing a computer, but because the prices here, which is the choice for a little more viable, since it is unlikely to buy a decent desktop for $ 129. On the contrary – you need a desktop computer? Because if you do, you probably want something a little more powerful than what is offered by Webtop.
In the upper box, you hear a little more to report. Motorola has created a very elegant and clean interface through which you can access video, music and photos, but the included remote control to navigate through your content appears to be beaten or lost. When we had our dock about 5 feet away from where we sat, remote control, sometimes it is functional to navigate menus and make selections, so double and sometimes triple tap to get it registered. Motorola provides an interface for the handset on the base to monitor what is happening on screen, but it only makes sense if you have your base near where you sit, it is likely that the other side of the room (at least you sitting watching TV, where is connected).
The software is concerned, we like the clean, elegant interface that Motorola has created for your videos, photos and music, but had some problems with playback. In particular, we could get some M4V. Files to play, while others do not, and the only error we received was the best vague. Most files work without problems, however. In particular, the content, 720p it had fired on the phone looked very nice on a big screen, and play not so much as a stutter.
We’re not sure we really see a huge market for spring, unfortunately. There are much better ways to get their content on a television screen, and in fact only an HDMI cable to connect your phone and use the same features as the dock provides (sans remote … although the use of telephone control applications is actually preferable as far as we are concerned).
Mouse / Keyboard
Motorola is not really known for the production of computer peripherals very well, but we’re pretty impressed with the keyboard and mouse of the company has made here.
Both products work wirelessly via Bluetooth, and we had no trouble linking with our setup. In particular, as the mouse, as it approaches the Logitech M555b (a favorite) in size and functionality. The keyboard, meanwhile, the style is somewhere between an Apple wireless keyboard and BlackBerry in recent years – as in, we’re not crazy about the choice of font. However, a solid keyboard, Chiclet-style space retention desktop and has a handful of custom keys for Android, they do jump to specific applications such as Gmail or browser very quickly. We’re not sure if you have to pay the extra money on these, but make good partners with other offers Moto.
Data
AT & T and Motorola are billing Atrix as a 4G device. Hell, it’s the term in its name! We would like to report that the 4G-like speeds on your phone, but in reality is quite the opposite.
Compared with other phones we’ve tested in the network at the same points, the 4G has a lower rank tests Atrix really download and upload speed. In general, we have seen an average speed downloads 1. 5 Mbps, while uploads were even worse in almost was 0.15 Mbps maximum download 2. 2 Mbps territory sometimes, but that was not the norm. During testing, the phone had four or five bars, and was the display of the HSPA + icon.
The funny thing is that if you compare against the iPhone device 4 in the AT & T – tested in exactly the same places – to see very different results. On the iPhone, data speeds were always in the range of 2 to 3 Mbps download and about 1 Mbps upstream.
We’re not sure what the problem with the data, but we’re not seeing anything close to 4G in these tests. If AT & T was hoping to impress with his speed HSPA + network, which still has much work to do.
Pricing
Here is where the rubber really hits the road in these devices. Atrix 4G it will cost $ 199.99 with a 2 year contract. The portable pier itself is a whopping $ 499. 99 (less a $ 100 mail-in rebate and $ 100 instant rebate, bringing it to $ 299. 99). You can get the HDD / Dock own desktop for $ 129.99, or package (with keyboard and mouse) for $ 189.99.
In short, to leave an AT & T store (or website) with only basic phone and laptop, you’re dropping $ 653 and then wait for you back $ 100 in the mail. Now that’s a lot of cash for a phone and what amounts to half a laptop – even if you can impress friends with him. And do not forget, AT & T insists it has a data plan for the detention, which will cost $ 45 a month – and that is a containment plan can be used with your access point and any other device you want … as a netbook.
In general, there is great value if you leave the bottom of the notebook, desktop base, and some accessories – in fact, there is a kind of value.
Wrap-up
Atrix 4G could be our favorite Android device we’ve tested. It has specs that run circles around most other devices, which should make the most of potential buyers feel a bit safer about laying out cash for a smartphone at this time. We’re not saying that the phone has its problems – and we’re not big fans of the implementation of aspects of Motorola – but this is a power of a device in a sleek package and Android means opening the customization you will be able to make a phone that feels like their own. So yes, yes to Atrix 4G, because it is an awesome phone.
The biggest question you have to wonder whether or not spring is for accessories, and our response to that is closer to something like “probably not.” We love the dock and pier HD notebook (laptop, especially the spring!), But it’s difficult to warm to these devices do not comply with the experience you are paying. Our advice? Skip the spring notebook and get a good netbook (several options) and the spring to fix the plan so that you can use the “4G”, you’re paying (check your coverage area, of course). If you absolutely need the phone to get double duty as entertainment base, just get a long HDMI cable – you and your wallet will thank us later.
